On one of the Shetland islands, Papa Little, there was once the belief that mice and rats could not live on ‘this once holy island’ (Manson, 1933, 162), and the people from around it used to take earth from it and put the earth under their haystacks, ‘which thereafter remained free of mice.’ Curious.
