Standing Stone:  OS Grid Reference SE 212 627

Getting Here

Follow the public footpath past Highfield Farm and ask the farmer permission to wander his land if you want to see the stone. He is very amiable and gives directions right to it, telling us it was off the footpath in the middle of one of his fields.

The Nidderdale OS map shows a ‘Standing Stone Hill’ just north Hartwith village, near Summerbridge but I couldn’t find much reference to a standing stone here.  Thankfully the farmer was good.  He told us that the stone was pushed over by cattle in recent years, after loads of torrential rain, but he and his family re-erected it – which was well decent!  The views from here are damn good aswell.

Messrs Boughey & Vickerman (Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding, 2003), mention there being three cup-marks on it, but they were hard to make out.
