“The man who sat on the ground meditating on life and its meaning, accepting the kinship of all creatures and acknowledging unity with the universe of things, was infusing into his being the true essence of civilization. And when man left this form of development, his humanization was retarded in growth.”
Here is yet another gathering of all things megalithic (‘big-stone-ish’): of standing stones, stone circles, prehistoric rock art, and all things ancient. Well, most ancient stuff anyway! Initially I intended this to be a gathering place of sites from the great heathen kingdoms comprising old Brigantia, northwards (drawing a line, roughly, along the south Derbyshire border, coast to coast, then up through Yorkshire, Lancashire, the Scottish Lowlands and all the way up through the magnificent Highlands), but then I thought, “Hey!, why let them retarded middle-class southern-types hog the sites!? - Us Northerners have more about us and better appreciate them in the raw, so to speak!” So I decided to include a selection of some sites from beneath the Brigantian boundaries, where the great limp-wristed minds of ‘daan Sowf’ ‘appen to be. It aint the archaeological site’s fault that they’ve got such people living near ‘em I s’ppose!
This is a ‘Northern’ antiquarian website for two real reasons. The first is that the psychological attributes of those running other sites is very much a ’southern’ thing. One antiquarian website in particular has a distinct lack of irreverence, aswell as a pedantic intolerance to people with other viewpoints (deleting posts, forum comments, etc.), whilst acting like it’s oh so ‘nice‘: attributes characteristic of sad egomaniacs and control freaks. But the second more important reason is that, to be honest, our northern sites are better than the stuff ‘daan Souf’. Yeah, they’ve got Avebury and its surrounds, sure – but they’ve been done-to-death; and Stonehenge has about as much real spirit and feeling as a MacDonalds! But get up into the Pennine chain of hills, away from the intensive farming lands of the southern land-owners and their mantra of “gerrof maa land”; away from the countless polluted springs and streams so beloved of Southern-folk, and we begin to feel the winds and wilderness once more. We find sites hidden away, much more so than the stuff that’s been done-to-death daan Souf. And so ‘The Northern Antiquarian’ has had to emerge…
The Northern Antiquarian is an attempt (help!) to add another decent data-base of archaeological sites which many people have a deep interest in: old standing stones, circles, neolithic remains, holy wells, prehistoric rock art, and all the remains from the neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age period. As you’ll see we have the usual categories, with the general information, folklore and illustrations of the archaeological sites, some of which are new discoveries never before printed in either journals nor websites. On the whole, this site has more of a northern bias; but although there’ll be some sites from those backward Southern realms, there’ll be none of that up-the-arse retentive attitude we find endemic in some of those lower english regions! This is a Northern Antiquarian in both sites and attitude – so if you are easily offended by the occasional irreverence, turn back now! Otherwise, plod on into our pre-christian past and visit the many sites that live here…..
I’m hoping, sometime in the near future, to create a template allowing other people to add their own sites, notes and images onto TNA – but I’m new at this, so it might take a while. But please feel free to add any comments about the website. And if you really wanna get your teeth into something and talk with other folk with similar interests, go to the TNA Forum and waffle at your leisure. Irreverence is not discouraged – though open and continued abuse (e.g., ‘effing this’ and ‘effing that’) will get you the red card eventually! Some of you, if I don’t like you, may get banned straight away – but that’s gonna be very rare. However, extremist New-Age crap or egomaniacs won’t be tolerated (I have incredibly open-minded approaches to things, but extremists – be they reductionists or new-agers – can go play with themselves!). Everyone else – enjoy the site!

Sorry to have to write this, but there are a small number of plagiarists, liars and thieves out there in the archaeological and megalithic world, who edit little magazines, write articles, etc. - and it is wholly to them that this message is to. In the event that anyone uses any material from TNA, please be respectful and give credit to this website and/or the writer or discoverer of any given site. In the event that you don’t act in this way (and I find out), I’ll simply use your material at my leisure and add it here, without credit to yourself. There is also a strong probability that I’ll start up a ‘Tossers’ page*, and add info about you at my leisure (which could be fun!), irrespective of who you are. But let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Please give any credit to ‘The Northern Antiquarian’ with a link to the respective web-page. I respectfully credit any material I find to its source and would only hope that other people do the same – though know that a small minority of people don’t seem to give a toss. And they know exactly who they are… Many thanks.
* there’s one in the Admin-pages, at the ready!
This site would never have been possible without the considerable help of legendary web-design dood, Madame Gabby Fuckduck and his schizophrenic cohort, Miss Gay Fukner! I salute you sirs! They do the lay-out – I merely add the words!
